Kaduna state governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for suspending Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen over discrepancies in asset declaration to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).
In a tweet on the afternoon of Friday, January 25, shortly after Onnoghen’s removal was announced, El-Rufai saluted Buhari’s decision, saying: ‘Sanity needs restoration’.
El-Rufai slammed what he called ‘institutional gobblydegook and regionalization’, noting that it was time that the action was taken.
El-Rufai, who was replying to a tweet of the Presidency announcing the swearing in of the new acting CJN said he remained solidly in support of the president’s action.
Recall that we had reported that Governor El-Rufai advised Onnoghen to voluntarily resign his position in honour of the esteemed status of the judiciary.
Governor El-Rufai, fielding questions on ‘Sunrise Daily’, a breakfast show on Channels Television, said that since the CJN had admitted culpability of the allegations leveled against him, he should resign honourably and save the judiciary from embarrassment.
We reported that Justice Onnoghen is facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal over non-declaration of assets.
